Miami Graffiti

November 2007
1) What do you write and what crews do you represent?

Krave - AD BC

2) Where did you get your tag? Any special meaning behind it?

I wrote it in jest at first, no meaning in the beginning, but it started to mean more as time went on. It represented the urge I had to paint. I krave this graff isht'.

3) When did you start writing and what were some of your early influences?

I got serious in like 82, ha' just playing, 1994. I attended school in downtown where there was mad talent. Every day during the commute, I would just get my head blown up seeing all of the graff on rooftops and what not. It instantly consumed me.

Some name influences would be Ghetto Clowns: Chase & Hostile, Retro Kids: Nemo & Lady Digit, Ster TM, STV, Skeme, Neks, Ease, Meer, Ener, AIM, G7, Roam, WE crew, Each, Gwiz & Nine, Bhakti, War, Sero & Tekx, I could go on... Oh, and big ups to my first partner in crime, Heps Fury, the legendary B-boy.

4) What was your favorite Penit/Wall and why?

Airport Penit. The bus ride wasn't horrible, and always an adventure. I really appreciated the space and ventilation factor. You could paint on like the third floor with a great breeze and nice view, and there would always be a surprise around the corner. Good or bad, never a dull moment.

5) Is there any crazy story that sticks out in your mind from days at that Penit/Wall??

Nothing in particular. Just loved chilling in downtown bombing alleyways. Getting there mad early and cruising through downtown to hunt spots that would blow peoples heads up. Finding some hidden rooftop that no one will probably ever see and just doing some alien masterpiece type isht' with scrap cans. Catching hand styles on bus benches. Climbing to the top of some occupied office building across from the Metro rail to get a prime spot. Acting as catalyst for the unexpected bloom of critical art in unexpected places.

6) Name a Miami writers work that you respect a lot (thats not in your crew/associated crews) and why?

Crome. Most well rounded and prolific writer around. Not to mention he's been consistently doing graff since before I can remember.

7) Any good stories about a time you got chased or busted?

Was out bombing in like 1995, when I was just a jit, high and drunk, you know the deal with that. Walked up a main street by my hood (186th?), down in Goulds west of US-1 and caught wreck for like an hour or so. About to call it a night, right as cop car pulls up, "Stay where you are!". I hesitated for a second, and then took off running. I threw my can, cop car chased me across a field. When we got close to a fence he started bumping into me trying to knock me down, so I used his car hood to hop the fence, ha! Fat boy couldn't do shit, but his backup was like diesel robocop. He hopped out of his car and started chasing me thru the hood. When I realized my legs wouldn't get me out of trouble, I started weaving in between palm trees and shit trying anything to get away. Funny shit was, I was running into the heart of Goulds. All these homies saw two white dudes running full speed down their street and started flipping their crates and running. My legs eventually just gave out and I had a knee in my back shortly after. Now this part of the story is something I am not really proud of. So a knee in my back, hands behind my head, I'm yelling, "I DIDN'T DO IT, I DIDN'T DO IT!!!", the cop says, "You didn't do what?". I said, "The graffiti!", then I immediately realized he didn't know what I had been doing, they had just stopped me because I looked out of place. Worst shit ever. Thank you advocate program!

8) Whats the biggest problem with Toys nowadays?

I don't deal with too many toys. But there is not enough peeps showing them what time it is. Role models that perpetuate beef, lack of respect, and no ethics. No one ever covers this issue, though I don't like homogenous order and I don't have territoriality issues, fucking up my 80 year old retired neighbors fence is still wack to me, and tagging peoples cars is wack. There is a place for this isht', public spaces, hit shit thats on its way out.

9) Your crew BC was the starting point for alot of successful talent. Wen is a notable fine artist, Atomik is blowing the Miami graff scene up, Space is repping with a dope graff crew in NYC, and you're pioneering the Urban Art world down here. Some comments on the crew and how it came together?

Beyond Control 'til the death. Early BC, we challenged each other. We had good energy, unequivocal devotion, and shared the same ultimate goal of being the freshest. We made sure not to let any slackers in the crew and kept high standards. We all had our own natural facilities/gifts and the meaning of the crew was to be free from the mental confines and societal strictures. It was also important to not compromise our artistic vision for laws set by a government run by criminals. It's a mentality I hold, just as I defy corrupt establishment, I don't compromise my beliefs when other writers start telling me that real graffiti is illegal. They don't know isht' about my contributions to the movement.

But the success of BC is greatly credited to Atomik. We met at Hot Wheels in 1995. When I saw his black book, I couldn't figure out why he was pushing a subsidiary crew of HA (BHA), he was ready for bigger things. Then I guess he realized the same thing, because we went bombing in The Crossings that night, and BC was born. From there he found Space, View, and Wen was a mutual friend. Most of us stayed with it.

I was lucky that talent was never an issue with these guys. I think the driving force was the fun of it really. We liked it because we were good at it. We competed individually, but eventually shit broke apart due to weak alliances, and that is why my real crew is just my friends and family now. But BC was the illest piecing crew I was part of so far in my career. I wish them all the success in the world.

10) What do you think of the Graf Scene in South Florida and Where do you think its headed?

Pros: It's thriving. We are gonna be on the world map soon enough. Mad original styles and flavors. A lot of heart and competition.
Cons: Perpetual beef and Massive ego's. Also a lack of progression in application, I could go on, but I'll just do what I want to see more of.

Stay Up! One love!
