Miami Graffiti

October 2007
1) What do you write and what crew do you represent?

I write Kombyn otherwise known as Kombs : UFD SSK

2) Where did you get your tag? Any special meaning behind it?

I used to write a different name for a few years and got kinda tired of the letter connections. So I was messing around with different letter combinations one day and I wrote out "combine" and kinda liked the way it sounded, so then I tried substituting letters out and spelling it phonetically and really liked it.

3) When did you start writing and what were some of your early influences?

I started toying it up in about 1992 as a punk. When I really understood the basic meaning behind the concept of graffiti, and that there is a whole culture and movement behind it, was about 1994. I started piecing on paper in like 1993, biting shit, and then started hitting the streets in like 1995-96. As far as early influences, the first person I really looked up to and schooled me on most of the things, and where my style has evolved from, is my boy Aeon. We are closer than brothers. If it had not been for him, I wouldn't even be involved in this thing. Much respect to Aeon .... good looking out!! Also coming up in the south it was the usual suspects: WOW, AIM, IHS, STV, FS and from the north end was crews like DAM, BSK and 7UP.

4) What was your favorite Penit/Wall and why?

My favorite penit had to be Malibu, with the Dam Wall a close second. Growing up I wasn't poor, but I didn't have access to any type of automobile. So everywhere we (the crew) went, we humped it. Bus to here, metrorail to there, then another bus. Shit, it used to take us a few hours to get to a penit, that was like a 45 minute drive away. Now looking back: going on those missions with all your paint on your shoulder, making sure that the disposable camera had a couple flix in it (if we had one at all), and the determination to do something whether it was a penit trip or to do some rooftops or billboards or anything else, it really helped us grow as a family. That is what I liked about those penits. Agripost was another mission, it used to take us 3 hours to get there, but it was cool catching buses that you had rode on previous trips that you bombed the seats with meanstreaks or got up with scribes or sandpaper in the windows. And then to see others who had been there also, possibly on the same mission.

5) Is there any crazy story that sticks out in your mind from the early days?

Honestly?... there is a grip of stories, but off the top I can't pick out a specific time. You see, every time we went to paint or to a penit, we had fun, and that was our purpose. We wanted to go paint and enjoy ourselves while doing it, and we did! There was some crazy shit going down. Like I said before, for a long time before we could afford wheels, we had to go on a fantastic voyage type shit to get anywhere really, so there was bound to be some crazy shit happen during the journey. Whether it was run-ins with crackheads and bums, to your common hookers trying to get your last change that you need to get on the bus, or crazy people approaching you with off the wall futuristic predictions, or dudes trying to sell you glasses that Venus Williams wore in a tennis match, I mean you name it....

6) Name a Miami writers work that you respect a lot (thats not in your crew/associated crews) and why?

I would have to say Siner. He gets sick with it, is well rounded in talents from handstyles to productions, and he gets up. There are a lot of writers that are good, but they don't get their work out there, and to have the talent and the drive to put your work on mainstreet is a respectable accomplishment.

7) Any good stories about a time you got chased or busted?

Never got pinched, but there have been too many times where I was in a footrace with the other side of the law and barely got away. I don't want to get too specific, but me and Aeon got rushed by police hitting a spot that will remain nameless, and had to run through trenches on some military covert special ops type shit. We were belly crawling in some crazy construction field and ended up reaching and hiding in a swamp for a couple of hours. Getting attacked by flesh eating insects, trying to watch out for crocs while the searchlights were passing over our heads. It was worth it to get away though.

8) Whats the biggest problem with Toys nowadays?

Respect for the founders of this game. There is a mentality that is "in style" now that goes like "fuck what was back then, this is now" and that's just fucked up. I'm not saying you have to bow down and kiss the feet of the people that came before you, but know your role and learn about the history of this craft before you try to pick up this artform and throw a half ass attempt at it and call yourself a king.

9) You seem to do a nice balance of Freights and Walls, comments on that?

I like to spread it out. My heart is with the steel, but being in the situation I am in with being the sole provider for my family, I have to really plan my shit out so walls usually are more readily available whether it's legals or not. But if I catch some freights slippin it's over, time to krush.

10) What do you think of the Graf Scene in South Florida and Where do you think its headed?

Well as much as I would like to say the Graf Scene sucks here in South Florida, I won't, only because I don't think people should talk shit without doing something to change it. I mean if you think it's so bad, then do something to make it better right? I don't feel that I do enough around town right now to cast that judgement. I think S. Fla has the potential to be a dope spot for graf, especially with the amount of out of town traffic we get here. Just not enough people putting up quality shit. Shouts to my crews UFD and SSK, a new year is coming upon us and it's in these times we must make a stand and put all the cards on the table to see who is really holding.
